Mausoleum of Mir Sayid Ali Hamadani

Location: Khatlon Region, Kulob City, Central Park

Nestled in the heart of Kulob, within a serene park shaded by centuries-old plane trees, stands the Mausoleum of Mir Sayid Ali Hamadani—a revered 14th-century poet, philosopher, and Sufi mystic. This sacred site also serves as the final resting place for his son, Sayid Muhammad, numerous relatives, and Sheikh Shohi Tolikoni from the Afghan city of Taloqan, who once served as the mausoleum’s custodian.

Historical Significance

Mir Sayid Ali Hamadani was a prominent figure in the spread of Islam and Persian culture across Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. His contributions to literature and Sufism have left an indelible mark on the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

Architectural Overview

The mausoleum is a testament to traditional medieval architecture, constructed from baked bricks. The original structure, dating back to the late 14th century, features a domed hall with three portal entrances and intricate carved decorations. Over time, additional structures, including a mosque and a shrine, were incorporated into the complex. In the 1970s, restoration efforts aimed to preserve the mausoleum’s historical integrity, ensuring that it retained the architectural nuances developed over five centuries.

Marble Epitaph: Adjacent to the mausoleum lies a marble headstone, measuring approximately 176 cm in length, 35–38 cm in width, and 51 cm in height, and weighing about a ton. Legend has it that this epitaph was transported to Kulob from India by elephants. The eastern side bears Persian inscriptions, while the western side contains the family lineage of Amir Muhammad bin Shaikh Abdullah, the son of the ruler of Khatlon.​
